Leeds United vs Stoke City: 5 players who could dictate tonight’s clash

Leeds United vs Stoke City takes place in the Championship at Elland Road tonight. Here, we pick out five players who could dictate the tie…

Leeds United will be looking to respond to a lacklustre display against Huddersfield Town on Saturday.

Daniel Farke’s side struggled to a draw against a combative Huddersfield outfit on Saturday afternoon. It was a game many expected them to win and extend their win streak to 10 consecutive Championship games. It was not to be.

Instead, Daniel Farke’s Whites side will need to regroup and pick themselves up in a quick turnaround against an inconsistent Potters outfit. However, results picked up at the weekend with a win against Middlesbrough.

Stoke City are right in the fight for survival, sitting 22nd in the Championship table as one of four sides on 38 points. The Middlesbrough win could be a turning point, but they’ll know a tough test awaits here.

Here, we look at five players who could dictate Leeds United vs Stoke City tonight…

Georginio Rutter

Rutter has proven too much for many Championship sides to handle. Leeds United’s club-record buy simply floats by defenders at times. His skill with the ball and his eye for a pass makes him a danger for any side and a low centre of gravity means he is also incredibly difficult to knock off the ball.

He was not at his best on Saturday against Huddersfield Town, but he will be trouble for Steven Schumacher’s side is if if he is on song.

Ki-Jana Hoever

22-year-old Hoever could have his work cut out tonight if he features at right-back for the Potters. He will likely be up against compatriot Crysencio Summerville, who is one of the Championship’s standout players this season.

The on-loan Wolves youngster has shown that he can handle the rigours of English football’s second-tier competition. He has featured in 30 games for Stoke City this season, scoring one goal and registering two assists. However, the defensive side of his game is likely more needed this evening.

Dutch youngster Summerville is still only 22 but he is already grabbing the headlines in the Championship. He has 15 goals and eight assists to his name already this season. Summerville almost made it 16 goals on Saturday, only to see his shot ping off the outside of the post.

He wasn’t at his best or anything nearing it against Huddersfield Town. However, he will want to turn on the style in front of a baying 36,000+ Elland Road crowd. If he does, it could be a long night for the Potters to endure.

Andre Vidigal

Portuguese left-wing star Vidigal was snapped up by the Potters from Maritimo in the summer. He is their leading scorer this season with five goals and will be one of their main threats against a miserly Leeds United defence.

The Whites high press and energetic style means that chances will be few and far between for Stoke City. Vidigal will be living off of scraps of chances and he will not get many of those. The Portuguese flyer will need to convert whatever chances he gets to give Stoke a chance of victory.

Joe Rodon

Leeds United’s on-loan defender Rodon has impressed all since arriving at Elland Road over the summer. Quite simply put, he is a rock at the centre of a very tight defensive unit. He usually plays alongside Pascal Struijk but his current partner in fellow Wales international Ethan Ampadu.

With him in the heart of the Leeds defence, the Whites are proving a hard nut to crack. It has been 67 days and 900+ minutes since Daniel Farke’s side conceded a goal from open play. Rodon is a vital part of that effort and helps to marshall and hold together the Championship’s meanest defence.
