‘Keep an eye on him’ – Reporter comments as Chelsea, Arsenal eye Sunderland mainstay

Sunderland goalkeeper Anthony Patterson will be one to ‘keep an eye on’ this summer amid Premier League interest, reporter Graeme Bailey has said.

Sunderland academy graduate Patterson has become the go-to man in between the sticks since breaking into the first-team on Wearside. He’s continued to impressive this season too, despite the Black Cats’ tricky Championship campaign.

The 23-year-old has kept eight clean sheets in 36 games across all competitions, taking himself to 32 clean sheets in 113 first-team games for the club. Patterson has been widely tipped for a future at a higher level after proving himself in the EFL.

Now, with clubs up and down the country sure to have an eye on potential summer recruitment plans, reporter Graeme Bailey has said Patterson will be one to ‘keep an eye on’.

As quoted by the Nottingham Forest News, Bailey said that while top clubs Liverpool, Arsenal and Chelsea are keen, Nottingham Forest are another who could hold interest. He said:

“We know Liverpool are looking around as well at potential new signings.

“Anthony Patterson at Sunderland is one who I imagine would be very high on the Forest radar as well and a lot of clubs in the Premier League are looking at him.

“Chelsea, Liverpool and Arsenal are looking at him, he’s homegrown and he’s a very good keeper so keep an eye on him as well.”

Who is this?

A step up awaits?

There won’t be many that would say Patterson will not be a Premier League player in the future. It seems to be a case of when rather than if for the Sunderland goalkeeper as he continues to star in the Championship.

As a homegrown player with plenty of experience at only 23, Patterson seems destined for a step up. With Bailey highlighting the Liverpool, Chelsea, Arsenal and potential Nottingham Forest interest, it seems the shot-stopper won’t be short of options any time soon either.

What remains to be seen is just what Sunderland’s action will be. Patterson is a vital player on Wearside and ultimately, they hold the ambition of rising to the top-flight themselves. That seems highly unlikely to happen this season, but they’ll want to make a push up the Championship table next season, and Patterson would be key to that.

As the Black Cats often do, they will likely place a fairly sizeable price tag on Patterson. He’s under contract until 2028, so if Patterson is to make a rise to the Premier League in the summer, it will have to be on Sunderland’s terms.
