The72’s writers offer their vs Southampton vs Preston North End prediction ahead of their Championship clash on Wednesday evening.

Southampton head into this midweek battle off the back of a thrilling seven-goal encounter against Birmingham City in which they won 4-3 away from home.

Koji Miyoshi, Jay Stansfield and Juninho Bacuna were amongst the goals for Birmingham, the latter striking after Dion Sanderson’s sending off, but a late injury time winner from Joe Aribo secured victory for the Saints after Adam Armstrong, David Brooks and Ché Adams had scored the previous three. The result kept Russell Martin’s men 4th in the Championship, five points off the automatics.

Preston North End, on the other hand, drew their last fixture 0-0 against fellow play-off hopefuls Hull City at Deepdale.

The result was probably fair given the even contest between the two sides, although it was certainly a surprise to see the game end goalless considering the amount of chances both teams managed to create. A draw for the Lilywhites saw them remain 8th in the table, three points away from the top six.

Here, a handful of our writers make their predictions for the game…

Jacob Hackett

“This is another tough fixture to call given the form of the two sides, on paper you would expect Southampton to pull through but they have been far from their best as of late.

Preston have been impressive on their recent run, they are seven games unbeaten in a spell which has seen them beat Ipswich Town and Coventry City, so they will feel capable of attaining a result at St. Mary’s.

“The Saints fought until the end against Birmingham at the weekend, though, and that fighting spirit should easily have boosted their confidence again.

“I think this will be a pretty even contest, but I can see Preston’s run coming to an end in narrow fashion.”

Southampton vs Preston North End prediction: 2-1

James Ray

Southampton needed that return to winning ways at the weekend, though they were really made to work for it. They’re in for a tricky game on Wednesday night too, with Preston in form and on a push to break into the play-offs.

“Ryan Lowe’s side had an extended spell of really poor form and performances but they look to be out of it, and you just wonder if they’ve managed to hit their stride at the perfect time.

“There’s a real chance the visitors claim a big result here but with Southampton getting back to winning ways last time out, I don’t think they’ll end this empty handed. I’ll go for a draw.”
