30-year-old facing uncertain Coventry City future with summer targets eyed

Coventry City are looking at potential left-back targets for the summer, leaving Jake Bidwell’s future uncertain, according to reporter Tom Collomosse.

Coventry City added experienced defender Bidwell to their ranks in January 2022. They recruited him from Championship rivals Swansea City and since then, he’s played 92 times for the Sky Blues.

The 30-year-old has been Mark Robins’ go-to man on the left-hand side of the backline for much of the recent months. Bidwell has played 25 times across all competitions this campaign, though Jay Dasilva has taken the starting spot in recent games.

Now, with one eye on the summer, it is said ex-Everton and Brentford man Bidwell is facing an uncertain future.

Writing on X, reporter Tom Collomosse has said that the left-back’s fate is up in the air as Coventry City set their sights on potential left-back targets for the summer transfer window. Bidwell is under contract until 2025 and Collomosse predicts he would not be short of suitors if a move came to fruition.

On the move?

It does seem feasible that Bidwell moves on from Coventry City in the summer. A move later this year would allow the Sky Blues to get a fee for his services, rather than potentially losing him for nothing at the end of his deal in 2025.

For that reason, it’s wise that they’re already weighing up potential left-back targets. They can get ahead on recruitment planning for the summer, allowing them to hopefully move quickly for their target, allowing them to settle into life under Mark Robins.

For Bidwell, it will be intriguing to see just how his situation pans out. As Collomosse points out, you would think he will have plenty of Championship options available.

He mainly plays as a left-back but can play further forward as a wing-back if needs be, and as a left-sided centre-back. Bidwell has played 385 times in the second-tier over his career, so he would offer an experience and pedigree that few other available left-backs may be able to offer.
