‘I did have other interest’ – Midfielder has say on new move after Ipswich Town exit

Portsmouth new boy Lee Evans has said he has had other ‘interest’ from elsewhere since leaving Ipswich Town.

Portsmouth have swooped to land the midfielder on a free transfer on a deal until the end of the season.

Evans, 29, cut ties with Ipswich Town last month and has now found himself a new home in League One.

He has said, as per Pompey’s official club website: “I did have other interest, but this was the club I wanted to join. Now I’m here to do what I can until the end of the season.”

He added: “I’ve been finishing my rehab at Ipswich and I want to thank them for all the work they’ve done with me.

“I also did some training with the under-21s, but it was nice to have the first one [with Pompey] where the intensity was a bit sharper and I enjoyed it.”

Evans is a shrewd addition by Portsmouth and injects more quality and depth into their midfield department as they look to get promoted from the third tier.

He knows what it takes to get out of that league having done it three times in the past, most recently with Ipswich last year.

The Wales international, who has made four caps for his country, has been on the books at Newport County, Wolves, Bradford City, Wigan Athletic and Sheffield United in the past.

Evans signed for the Tractor Boys in 2021 under their former boss Paul Cook and went on to make 61 appearances for them in all competitions, scoring six goals.

His game time dried up with the East Anglian outfit during the first-half of this term, hence why he was allowed to leave by mutual consent just after the end of the January transfer window.

He has said he has had other teams show an interest in signing him over recent weeks. However, he has made the decision to link up with Portsmouth.

John Mousinho’s side are top of the table above Derby County with 10 games left to play. They won 2-1 at home to Oxford United last time out.
