Norwich City defender likely to leave upon contract expiry, reporter claims

Norwich City centre-back Danny Batth looks set to leave on a free transfer this summer when his contract comes to an end, according to Sunderland Echo reporter Joe Nicholson.

Norwich City look to be in the mix for a place in the Championship play-offs come the end of the season. As things stand they are 7th in the table and are just one point outside of the top six.

The Canaries recruited well in the summer, bringing in a mix of youth and experience for the fight ahead. But one such experienced head hasn’t made the impression many thought he would have.

Danny Batth was signed from Sunderland on a free transfer in September last year. He joined on a one-year deal, which reportedly includes an option for a further year should all parties see fit.

However, since making the switch he has made just 10 appearances in the league, four of which have been starts. With this in mind, Sunderland Echo reporter Nicholson claims that the player looks set to leave in the summer when his deal comes to an end, and is unlikely to be offered fresh terms nor will the club trigger the additional 12 month option.

A tough season for Batth

Despite Norwich City’s relative successes and great form, it has been difficult for Batth to watch on from the sidelines. He will feel he has played a part in some capacity with his limited game time, but he would likely have wanted more.

Now aged 33 the defender will want to be playing consistently as he comes to the closing stages of his career. Should he not be guaranteed this at Norwich City, a move elsewhere is probably the best option at this point.

He will likely not be short of suitors. He has played for top clubs in the second tier and his experience and leadership would be vital for any clubs looking to get out of either the Championship or out of League one into the second tier.
