Southampton prioritise West Ham transfer deal this summer, report claims

Southampton are determined to pursue a move for West Ham midfielder Flynn Downes this summer after his successful loan spell, according to The Athletic.

Southampton look on course to secure a place in the Championship top six this season. After suffering relegation last term they will be eyeing an immediate return to the Premier League.

Russell Martin has been blessed with a strong squad capable of achieving promotion but they have also recruited very well across the campaign. One such signing has been West Ham midfielder Downes.

The 25-year-old only signed for the Hammers at the start of last season but after finding playing time hard to come by at the London Stadium, he made the switch to St. Mary’s on a season-long loan deal.

Since making the move the Championship side he has been a revelation and so it comes as no surprise to see The Athletic reporting that the Saints wish to make his loan permanent and are prioritising a move for the England youth international this summer, regardless of whether they secure promotion or not.

Should be a priority

Southampton prioritising a move for Downes is a perfect transfer strategy. Now aged 25, out of favour at West Ham given the number of players ahead of him, and thriving at Southampton, a permanent move to St. Mary’s looks a perfect fit.

It would certainly suit all parties given Downes would be getting regular playing time, West Ham can cash in on a player who could be deemed surplus to requirements and Southampton securing a deal for a player who has came in and improved their side significantly.

The Hammers reportedly signed Downes for a fee in the region of £12million and so a deal is certainly more likely to occur should Southampton secure promotion. If they remain in the Championship, they may not be able to match his parent club’s asking price.
