‘Determined to put things right’ – Derby County vs Port Vale prediction: The72

The72’s writers offer their Derby County vs Port Vale prediction ahead of their League One clash on Saturday afternoon.

Derby County head into this encounter following another disappointing defeat, losing 2-1 on home soil to Charlton Athletic.

Eiran Cashin headed the Rams in front just prior to half-time, but a second half capitulation saw Joe Wildsmith give away a clumsy penalty which Alfie May dispatched, before Karoy Anderson got on the end of a rebound to put the Addicks in front. Paul Warne’s men still remain 2nd in League One, but only due to Bolton Wanderers having also lost their last two.

Port Vale head to Pride Park after a disappointment of their own, letting a two-goal lead slip in the final moments of the game to draw 2-2 at home against Fleetwood Town.

Jensen Weir and Ethan Chislett sent the Valiants two goals up at the break, but Jayden Stockley halved the deficit in the 88th minute before grabbing his second of the night and levelling things in the third minute of injury time. Darren Moore’s side sit 22nd in the table, four points adrift of safety.

Here, a handful of our writers make their predictions for the game…

Jacob Hackett

“Derby will be furious with themselves for missing yet another chance to strengthen their grip on the top two, and they will be determined to put things right against Port Vale.

“The Rams’ defeat to Charlton was self-inflicted with two mistakes directly leading towards the Addicks’ goals on Tuesday, but if they avoid the same mistakes on Saturday they should be fine.

“Moore is yet to register a win since his appointment as manager of the Valiants a couple of weeks into February, losing his first three and of course drawing the last encounter.

“An ex-Derby player himself, I don’t see his return to Pride Park being a happy one this weekend. Warne’s men should win this comfortably.”

James Ray

“It’s not been an easy start to life at Port Vale for Darren Moore and given the Valiants’ poor run on the road, I can see Derby County picking up a much-needed win this weekend. They’ve lost four in a row away from home and I can see it becoming five here.

“For the Rams, they simply have to start taking chances to get a hold of 2nd place. They’re still there as it stands, but they can’t afford to let another chance slip if they’re to get automatic promotion.

“It might not be the prettiest of wins, but I’ll back the hosts to get over the line this weekend.”
