‘A difficult situation’ – Detail emerges over Tomasson’s new job talks before Blackburn Rovers exit

Blackburn Rovers saw Jon Dahl Tomasson depart in February but the Dane has now admitted he first held talks over the Sweden job before Christmas.

Blackburn Rovers parted ways with Tomasson early in February, quickly moving to bring in John Eustace as his replacement. Problems both on and off the pitch arose in the months of his tenure and ultimately, a stay became untenable.

The Dane cut a popular figure at Ewood Park for the most part, despite their Championship struggles this season. His honesty and transparency with the fan base amid a lack of that from the ownership saw Tomasson admired by supporters.

Tomasson has since become manager of the Sweden national team, a job he had been linked with before.

Now, the former Blackburn Rovers boss has admitted talks over the possibility of taking the role were held prior to Christmas. Speaking to Swedish outlet Aftonbladet (quotes via Sport Witness), he said:

“We’ve been talking since before Christmas. The situation at Blackburn was a bit different then. But I got the perfect feeling right away that I wanted to be part of that journey.

“The conversations we had were extremely positive and I got a ‘wow’ feeling that I really want to be involved.”

He was also quoted by Fotbollskanalen saying this on the situation at Blackburn Rovers:

“It was a difficult situation at Blackburn. They were cutting the budget. I signed for a project that was no longer there.”

Looking to the future

As Tomasson said himself, there’s no hiding the situation at Blackburn Rovers was a tough one. Under his tenure, they saw a total of three transfers fall through due to administration errors, with the most recent one regarding Duncan McGuire playing out as a public and frankly embarrassing saga.

In the summer, Tomasson saw his transfer budget decreased, putting him in a tough position in terms of recruitment once again.

It became clear that a change in management was needed for all parties. Now, for the club and former boss, attention turns to the future.

Blackburn Rovers will be looking to make sure of their Championship status under Eustace with the Lancashire outfit currently sat in 16th. Tomasson meanwhile will be gearing up for his first Sweden fixtures with Portugal up first later this month.
