Wrexham dealt injury setback ahead of Accrington Stanley clash

Wrexham boss Phil Parkinson has said defender Eoghan O’Connell has picked up a calf injury.

Wrexham’s centre-back now faces a spell on the sidelines as they hunt down promotion from League Two.

O’Connell, 28, picked up the blow in their last outing away at Forest Green Rovers as they ended up drawing 1-1 courtesy of striker Paul Mullin’s late equaliser.

Parkinson has said, as per a report by The Leader: “It’s not looking good.”

He added: “We have never moaned too much about the injuries because we have got a good squad but when you take away quality out of the team, of course it can be seen sometimes.”

Wrexham injury blow

O’Connell has made 21 appearances for Wrexham in all competitions so far this season, 18 of which have come in the league.

The former Republic of Ireland youth international dropped down two leagues to join the Welsh outfit from Charlton Athletic back in January 2023.

He helped the Red Dragons gain promotion from the National League last year along with Notts County.

The Cork-born man rose up through the ranks at Celtic and played 13 times for the Hoops, as well as having loan spells away from the Glasgow giants at Oldham Athletic, Cork City and Walsall to get experience.

He then had permanent stints at Bury, Rochdale and Charlton before Parkinson came calling.

Injuries have affected O’Connell this term and Wrexham will have to live without him for the time being as they chase down the top three Mansfield Town, Stockport County and Crewe Alexandra.

They are back in action this weekend with a home match against Accrington Stanley.

The Red Dragons are a point behind 3rd place with 12 matches left to play of this campaign.
