‘The end of the play-off push’ – Norwich City vs Sunderland prediction: The72

The72’s writers offer their Norwich City vs Sunderland prediction ahead of the Championship clash on Saturday afternoon.

Norwich City come into this weekend’s Championship clash with Sunderland looking to make it six games without defeat in the league. A 1-1 draw with Blackburn Rovers made it two draws and three wins in the last five.

That run has thrust David Wagner’s side right into the play-off fight. They sit 7th as it stands, three points behind Hull City.

Sunderland meanwhile have lost three consecutive games with a 2-1 loss to Swansea City marking a tough start to Mike Dodds’ caretaker tenure. This run puts the Black Cats 10th in the Championship table, though they’re now eight points off the play-off spots.

While time remains in the campaign, many will see this as a must-win game if the Wearside outfit’s top-six hopes are to remain intact.

Here, a handful of our writers make their predictions for the game…

James Ray

“I can see this ending pretty comfortably for Norwich City. Sunderland are in poor form and with main attacking outlet Jack Clarke facing a spell on the sidelines, I think the visitors’ attack is going to be pretty blunt.

“With the Canaries winning four home games on the spin and five undefeated in the Championship overall, they have to be favourites to claim a valuable win here. Three points might just mark the end of the play-off push for Sunderland, while boosting Norwich’s hopes.

“Nothing is ever guaranteed in the Championship, but I’ll say Norwich pick up a routine win.”

Norwich City are going well at the moment and I fancy them to pick up a win here.

The Canaries remain well in the hunt for a place in the play-offs under David Wagner as they chase down the likes of West Brom and Hull City. Their boss knows what it takes to get promoted having guided Huddersfield Town to the Premier League.

Sunderland’s hopes of reaching the top six are fading away fast and Jake Clarke’s injury is a massive blow for them. He has been a huge player for the Black Cats over recent times and his absence will be a massive miss for them over the coming weeks.”
