‘Off the boil’ – Birmingham City vs Southampton prediction: The72

The72’s writers offer their Birmingham City vs Southampton prediction ahead of the Championship clash on Saturday.

Birmingham City were beaten 3-1 away at Ipswich Town in their last Championship match. Jordan James was on the scoresheet for them at Portman Road.

The Blues find themselves in 18th position in the table. They are only three points above the drop zone.

As for Southampton, they are eyeing promotion back to the Premier League. Russell Martin’s men are five points off the top two with 12 games left of the season to play.

The Saints have lost three out of their last four league outings. They were beaten 3-0 away at Liverpool last time out in the FA Cup.

Here, a handful of our writers make their predictions for the game…

Harry Mail

Birmingham City could get sucked into a real relegation battle if they don’t start picking up more wins.

“The Blues’ aim will just be to stay up this term before they can start planning for the summer.

Southampton’s form has dipped over recent weeks and they need to find their feet again. I fancy the Saints to return to winning ways in the Midlands this weekend.

Russell Martin’s side have a lot of quality and they should have too much for the hosts if they show up and cut out their defensive mistakes.”

“There’s been glimpses that have shown Southampton know the pressure they’re under. Be it in the consecutive Championship defeats or in moments of tension for Russell Martin, they need to make sure they don’t go off the boil in such a competitive promotion fight.

“That’s not necessarily a bad thing though. The Saints will be more than aware of what’s at stake, hopefully inspiring them back to winning ways here.

“I do see a path to victory for the visitors here. They should have the quality to overcome Birmingham City, but at the same time, I wouldn’t be all that surprised if the Blues got a result. That said though, I will predict an away win.”
