Middlesbrough’s true stance on move for Manchester United man emerges

Middlesbrough have been linked to Manchester United youngster Will Fish this week, but the reports are wide of the mark according to a report from The Northern Echo.

Middlesbrough are in the market for a central-defender this summer. Paddy McNair is out of contract in June, and due to the injury problems for Darragh Lenihan, Dael Fry and Matt Clarke, it looks to be a priority position for head coach Michael Carrick.

One player they have reportedly been interested in signing is Manchester United centre-back Fish, who is currently on loan at Hibernian in Scotland.

Along with Middlesbrough, fellow Championship sides Blackburn Rovers, Hull City, Ipswich Town, Stoke City and Sunderland are also keen. Whilst Premier League outfit Sheffield United are also in the mix.

However, The Northern Echo state that the 21-year-old Fish isn’t on Boro’s radar as things stand, and will likely look to other targets ahead of a potentially busy summer transfer window.

What is Middlesbrough’s best solution?

Rather than prioritising assessing their current options with regards to extending McNair’s contract and getting Lenihan and Fry back to full fitness, they should dip into the transfer market for a new signing or two at the back.

Someone like Fish can provide an instant solution but also provide long-term cover in his position. If Middlesbrough aren’t keen on the 21-year-old, they should be looking to sign someone who fits a similar criteria who can improve their squad immediately but be a fixture in the side for years to come too.

The Teessiders have a good mix or youth and experience as things stand, and one of their standout performers this season has been teenage centre-back Rav van den Berg. If Middlesbrough can replicate their success in the transfer market with a similar style player they could be an extremely solid unit in defence.

Opinion: Middlesbrough need 24-year-old fit and available to stand a chance of reaching play-offs
