‘9/10’, ‘Bossed the midfield’ – Leeds United star lauded for standout display in Chelsea return

Leeds United’s full focus will switch to the league after losing an enthralling FA Cup tie against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday night.

Leeds United started with a few changes to their starting XI, with Daniel Farke taking the chance to rotate the ranks. It looked a makeshift side but it pushed Chelsea to their limits.

The Whites side scored first with young striker Mateo Joseph turning in a Jaidon Anthony assist. Chelsea were soon back on level terms through Nicolas Jackson, before another goal from Mykhailo Mudryk sent the home side into the break 2-1 up.

Leeds United stuttered in the opening 45, but they were more of a threat in the second period. The impressive Joseph equalised for the visitors, again netting from a pin-point Anthony cross. However, despite several chances to go ahead, it wasn’t to be for the West Yorkshire side.

With regulation time running out, substitute Conor Gallagher dinked the ball over Illan Meslier to send Chelsea through to the next round and a tie against Leicester City.

Returning old boy stars for the Whites

Among some good performances, one stood out for Yorkshire Evening Post reporter Graham Smyth.

That player was the rock-steady star Ethan Amapdu. He landed an impressive 9/10 match rating from Smyth, who had this to say about the former Chelsea youngster’s display against his old club:

Bossed the midfield for periods of the game, brought an incredible level of physicality and passed the ball really well. Some great long-range stuff.”

As highlighted by WhoScored’s match data, Ampadu’s display for the Whites had many highlights. His passing was highly accurate and the Wales international completed 56 of his 60 pass attempts (93%).

He also helped out on the other side of the game. The combative midfielder weighed in with two tackles and two interceptions to help break up Chelsea’s play.

Against Huddersfield Town in Saturday’s early Championship game, Ampadu is likely to slot back into the back four. However, his performance against Chelsea was a reminder of just what he can do in the midfield engine room.
