‘Far from play-off standard’ – Portsmouth vs Oxford United prediction: The72

The72’s writers offer their Portsmouth vs Oxford United prediction ahead of the League One clash on Saturday afternoon.

Portsmouth come into this weekend’s clash with Oxford United looking to further extend their gap at the top of the League One table. Both Derby County and Bolton Wanderers have missed chances to close in, both losing back-to-back games.

As a result, Pompey are seven points clear with 11 games remaining. John Mousinho’s side are eight unbeaten after a 0-0 draw with Charlton Athletic last time out.

Oxford United meanwhile are still in the play-off fight despite continued struggles. They have won just once in their last nine League One games, though that streak did include a run of five draws in six games.

Des Buckingham and co are in dire need of wins if they’re to get back into the top six though. The U’s are currently two points off the play-offs in 7th.

Here, a handful of our writers make their predictions for the game…

James Ray

Portsmouth fans could be forgiven for being a little nervous about the games in hand held by the chasing pack previously. However, with their nearest rivals slipping up, hopes are rising that this could finally be their season.

“With Oxford up next, I can see a continuation of their impressive form too. Mousinho’s former side have looked far from play-off standard in recent times and a trip to the leaders means things aren’t getting any easier.

“I’ll go for a 3-1 home win.”

Portsmouth have been brilliant on the whole this season as they eye promotion to the Championship.

“John Mousinho’s side have a habit of grinding out results and I can see them narrowly beating his former club here at Fratton Park.

“The U’s are no pushovers and are only outside the play-offs by two points behind Stevenage. However, I can see them slumping to a defeat this weekend. They lost 2-1 at home to Leyton Orient last time out and that could dent their confidence ahead of a tricky upcoming clash.”
