Birmingham City man unlikely to be offered new deal, reporter claims

Birmingham City striker Scott Hogan is likely to leave the club this summer when his contract comes to an end, Birmingham Mail reporter Alex Dicken has claimed.

Birmingham City signed Hogan from Aston Villa in 2020 for an undisclosed fee, and since he has gone on to make over 150 appearances for the Blues, scoring 36 goals during that time.

Now aged 31 years of age and out of contract in the summer, his days at St. Andrew’s are numbered. Since October the striker has started just two Championship games, making seven appearances in total. However, during this period Hogan has also been left out of the matchday squad entirely on five occasions.

According to Dicken at Birmingham Mail, the forward isn’t likely to be offered a new deal and will leave the club as a free agent in the summer. He goes on to say that he isn’t likely to be the only one, considering the high number of players whose deals expire in June later this year who are out of favour or on the peripheries of the first-team fold.

A boost for Sheffield Wednesday?

In December, fellow Championship side Sheffield Wednesday had registered an interest in signing Hogan from Birmingham City. Nothing came to fruition however, but given now they are unlikely to have to pay a transfer fee, this could be a deal the Owls revisit in the summer transfer window.

A lot may depend on what division Danny Rohl’s side are playing their football in next season of course. Hogan may not wish to drop down into League One should Sheffield Wednesday come calling after suffering relegation.

If the Owls do remain in the second tier this could prove a more promising and appealing proposition for the player, as he would likely want to play at the highest level he possibly can. Despite his form having gone off the boil however, given he is a free agent there will probably be plenty of interest.
