Swansea City defender gets first minutes since January injury against Sheffield United’s development squad

Swansea City’s Joe Thomas played for the first time in two months yesterday against Sheffield United Under-21’s in the Premier League cup, as detailed on the official club website.

Swansea City’s development side were thumped 5-1 against a Blades’ side that included Mason Holgate and Will Osula.

Thomas, 21, got some game time under his belt for the first time since his ankle injury in early January.

As per the club website, he played 81 minutes before being subbed off for Iestyn Jones.

Swansea City boost

Thomas played for Cambrian & Clydach Vale before linking up with Swansea in 2021. He has since been a key player for the Under-21’s side of the Championship outfit and has also played five times in the Welsh League Cup in this campaign.

His contract at the Swansea.com Stadium expires at the end of this season but the Swans hold an option to extend his stay by a further 12 months.

The versatile right-back, who can also play on the wing if needed, will be eager to force his way into Luke Williams’ senior plans in the future.

Thomas’ injury earlier this winter meant he wasn’t able to leave on loan for a fellow Football League team to get some experience. The door remains open for him to move into non-league if Swansea are keen for him to go somewhere to boost his development.

The Swans are currently sat in 17th in the table and are four points above the drop zone with 12 games left of this term to play.

Williams’ men secured an impressive away win against Sunderland last time out. They are back in action this weekend with a home clash against Blackburn Rovers as they look to build some momentum now.
