‘He was brilliant’ – Wigan Athletic man hailed by Shaun Maloney after Bolton Wanderers win

Wigan Athletic boss Shaun Maloney has labelled Callum McManaman as ‘brilliant’ after their win against Bolton Wanderers last night.

Wigan Athletic beat their rivals 1-0 at the DW Stadium after Stephen Humphrys’ second-half goal.

McManaman, 32, started the game for the hosts and helped his side pick up a big three points.

Maloney said after the game, as per a report by Wigan Today“Cal deserves to feel the way he’s feeling, because he was brilliant, he really was. He was our biggest threat in that first half, we had some good passages of play, but everything revolved around him.

“They’ve got good players, Bolton, their left wing-back is a very good player who caused us problems in the second half. But Callum was as good as anyone on the field in that first half.”

Wigan re-signed McManaman last summer for a third time and he penned a one-year deal with the League One side.

He has proved to be a useful player for the Latics in this campaign and has injected valuable experience into their ranks. He has made 40 appearances in all competitions, chipping in with two goals and three assists.

The attacker helped the North West outfit win the FA Cup back in 2013 before spells at West Brom and Sunderland.

He returned to Wigan in 2018 for a year before stints at Luton Town, Melbourne Victory and Tranmere Rovers.

Maloney’s decision to hand him a deal last year has turned out to be a shrewd one and he will be delighted with the performances of his former teammate.

The Latics are now sat in 13th place and are comfortably mid-table. They have also done the double over Bolton this term.

Wigan are back in action this weekend with an away trip to face Fleetwood Town. The Cod Army are fighting for their lives as they look to avoid slipping into League Two under Charlie Adam and they fought back from 2-0 down to draw 2-2 away at Port Vale last time out so will be in confident mood.
