The72’s writers offer their Wigan Athletic vs Bolton Wanderers prediction ahead of their League One clash on Tuesday evening.

Wigan Athletic head into this midweek with Bolton Wanderers encounter off the back of a 1-1 draw at home to relegation threatened Cheltenham Town, remaining 13th in the League One table as a result.

Matty Taylor had initially but the Robins ahead within nine minutes, but a second-half own goal from Elliott Bonds meant that the game ended all square. The Latics controlled most of the game, but will need an improved performance in front of goal if they are to grab a result on Tuesday.

Bolton Wanderers, on the other hand, travel to the DW Stadium following a devastating 4-1 defeat at the hands of Blackpool on Saturday afternoon, missing their chance to return to 2nd place.

Ian Evatt’s side initially found themselves ahead through George Thomason, but Jake Beesley and Marvin Ekpiteta sent the Seasiders in front at the break. Ricardo Santos was then sent off in the second half, giving away a penalty that Beesley dispatched before Jordan Lawrence-Gabriel wrapped up the scoring. Bolton remained 3rd in League One as a result.

Here, a handful of our writers make their predictions for the game…

Jacob Hackett

“Bolton are likely to feel deflated after their most recent performance, but they are still in a fantastic position and I’m sure Evatt won’t have allowed his players’ heads to drop too much.

“Wigan pose a tough challenge for the Wanderers, however, and would be sat 10th if not for their eight-point deduction at the start of the season.

“The Latics will have been disappointed having only drawn with Cheltenham and will be eyeing a response against their visitors tomorrow evening, though Bolton are in need of one too.

“I can see both sides cancelling each other out in this one, I’m leaning towards a score draw.”

Who is this?

James Ray

“While embroiled in such a competitive race for automatic promotion, Bolton Wanderers have no choice but to win here. This is a big chance to further reduce the gap to Portsmouth, but it’ll be a real test of their mentality after such a heavy defeat at the weekend.

“Wigan are capable of pulling off a big win too. They’ve shown against the likes of Peterborough United that they can compete with the division’s best.

“That said though, I think Evatt will have his squad fired up and ready to respond. I’ll go for a 2-1 away win.”
