‘Best player on the pitch’ – EFL pundit raves about Derby County ace’s performance in Exeter City win

Derby County midfielder Max Bird was the ‘best player on the pitch’ in the midweek win over Exeter City, pundit Ali Maxwell has said.

Derby County picked up a much-needed win over struggling Exeter City on Tuesday night. After toxic scenes in the away end after the weekend’s loss to Shrewsbury Town, the Rams had to bounce back with a win.

They did just that thankfully, condemning the Grecians to a sixth straight League One defeat. Nathaniel Mendez-Laing opened the scoring on the half-hour mark and Conor Washington secured the victory in the second-half, driving home after cutting in from the left.

It was a controlling display from Derby County and one man who stood out was central midfielder Bird. He provided the assist for Mendez-Laing’s opener in a slick move and after the game, he earned high praise from pundit Maxwell.

Writing on X, he labelled Bird as the ‘best player on the pitch’ at Pride Park, saying:

An improved display

Derby County needed a result like that. Their performances of late have been far from the standard expected by fans and far below the levels you would expect from them given the reputation of manager Warne and some of the players.

Bird is a player who can really control the game and in the tough moments the Rams have been through of late, he’s got the quality to really hold the midfield together.

Derby may sit 8th in the League One table with games in hand on some of the teams above them but it hasn’t been good enough of late. Hopefully, the win over Exeter City can mark the start of an impressive run as they look to fight for promotion back to the Championship again this season.

Next up is a trip to Stevenage, who dropped out of the top six after drawing with Bristol Rovers last night.
