‘8/10’ – Blackburn Rovers man lauded for ‘another brilliant performance’ in new position vs Millwall

Blackburn Rovers picked up a third consecutive Championship win away to Millwall on Tuesday night.

Blackburn Rovers looked to be in for a tough night when Wes Harding put Millwall ahead just three minutes in. However, it was just under 20 minutes before they were level, with Joe Rankin-Costello netting his second goal in as many games to make it 1-1.

Shortly into the second half, the visitors took the lead. A fantastic long ball from the impressive James Hill picked out Callum Brittain, who curled home on his weak foot to make it 2-1.

That was how it would end, lifting Blackburn Rovers to 10th in the table for the time being. There were a number of eye-catching performances from Jon Dahl Tomasson’s side, but goalscorer Brittain was arguably the pick of the bunch.

Not, only did he net his first goal for the club, but it was him who provided the assist for Rankin-Costello’s goal too. It marked another strong display for Brittain and his second consecutive start on the right-wing.

His efforts haven’t gone unnoticed either. The Lancashire Telegraph handed him an 8/10 rating for his performance, with reporter Elliott Jackson saying on the 25-year-old:

“Took his goal so, so well, having set up the equaliser too. His first for the club and another brilliant performance.”

Brittain’s new role

Brittain has spent the vast majority of his career playing as a wing-back or full-back. It seems he might have found a new lease of life in this more advanced position though, finding plenty of success on the wing.

He started there against Cardiff City to the surprise of many but his impressive display saw him placed there again last night. A return of a goal and an assist goes to show how well he has talent to the new role, so he’ll likely continue there moving forward.

Blackburn Rovers fans must be dreaming of a team of right-backs at the moment. Not only is Brittain thriving on the wing, but Rankin-Costello is quickly finding his feet in a central midfield role after breaking into Tomasson’s team as a full-back. Loan man Hill, naturally a centre-back, has caught the eye at right-back too as Rovers start to put together a much-needed winning run.

Next up for Rovers is a Championship clash with Swansea City, who lost to Watford last night.
