Michael Appleton issues update on fresh injury concern regarding Charlton Athletic striker

Charlton Athletic striker Chuks Aneke is set for a scan on his hamstring today after coming off in the win against Reading, Michael Appleton has said.

Charlton Athletic have had Aneke back in the side in recent weeks. After returning in some substitute outings, the striker made his first start in the win against Exeter City and his second came over the weekend at home to Reading.

He netted in the 4-0 win over the Royals too, but was forced to withdraw from the action shortly after the hour-mark. And, given how he’s struggled with injuries before, there was instant concern over the 30-year-old.

Ahead of the midweek clash with Lincoln City, ex-Imps boss Appleton has issued an early update on the Charlton Athletic man.

As quoted by the club’s official website, Appleton said that Aneke is poised for a scan today and then the Addicks will know more on the extent of the injury. Reassuringly, the striker is in ‘reasonable spirits’, but there’s no early judgement on the extent of the concern. He said:

“We’ll know a little bit more tomorrow. I believe he is being scanned tomorrow.

“Once we get the results back from the scan we’ll have a little bit of a better idea. He seems to be in reasonable spirits considering I know he’s got a little bit of a history with his hamstring. I think it’s one where we don’t want to get too far ahead of ourselves and second guess anything until we get the results.”

Fingers crossed

Aneke has shown what an asset he can be for Charlton Athletic before and after managing a goal and an assist in his last two games, it is hoped he can get back to his dangerous best under Appleton. However, given the history with injuries he’s got, the Addicks will know they should lean on the side of caution regarding his fitness.

Aneke has 55 goals and 27 assists to his name in 195 League One appearances and has scored 25 in 97 across his spells at The Valley. Keeping him fit could be key to success this season, so they’ll be wary to manage this carefully.

Charlton Athletic are still unbeaten under Appleton’s management, winning four and drawing three across all competitions. They’ll be keen to keep that run going against Lincoln tonight as they look to move up from 10th in the League One table.
