‘A fairly routine win’ – Blackpool v Wigan Athletic prediction: The72

Blackpool host Wigan Athletic in League One this weekend.

Blackpool come into this weekend’s home tie against Wigan Athletic looking to bounce back from a heavy EFL Cup defeat to Wolves. The Premier League side ran away 5-0 winners in a tough night at the office for the Tangerines.

Neil Critchley’s side haven’t had the brightest start to the League One season either. They’ve collected six points from five games, and haven’t netted in the league since the opening day of the season.

As for Wigan Athletic, they were making swift inroads up the table with an unbeaten first four games before losing 2-0 to Barnsley last time out. Young star Charlie Hughes was sent off in that home defeat.

Shaun Maloney’s Latics sit in 20th having moved onto two points after starting on minus eight.

Here, a handful of our writers make their predictions for the game…

James Ray

“If Blackpool are to achieve something this season, they really need to find form going forward. They’ve netted just twice in five League One games and haven’t managed a goal in their last five across all competitions.

“That could really play into the favour of Wigan, who have nine goals to their name thus far.

“The defeat to Barnsley comes as a blow but the Tykes should be up there come the end of this season, not to mention Maloney’s men were down to 10. I can see them getting back on track with a fairly routine win here. I’ll say 2-0.”

Score prediction: Blackpool 0-2 Wigan Athletic

What stadium is this?

Luke Phelps

“It’s been a very poor start for Blackpool. It looked like they could go one of two ways at Lincoln last weekend after drawing so many games, but it’s not looking great for them.

“Wigan meanwhile are looking typically formidable in League One this season. They suffered defeat last time out but I’m expecting them to be even more revved up for this one, as they continue to climb the third tier table.

“I’ll back Wigan for another win, piling more misery on the Seasiders.”

Score prediction: Blackpool 0-2 Wigan Athletic
