Southampton hope to steal march on Leeds United in Piroe chase with cunning transfer ploy

Southampton are plotting a joint bid for Swansea City duo Joel Piroe and Nathan Wood, claims Football Insider.

Earlier this week, it was claimed that Southampton has submitted a £10million bid for Wood, 21, following his standout 2022/23 season with Swansea City.

That claim was later played down, but now Football Insider are saying that the Saints are ‘ready to submit’ a joint bid for Wood and his Swans teammate Piroe, who has also been closely linked with Southampton throughout the summer.

The 24-year-old Piroe is also wanted by Leeds United who are said to have stepped up their interest in Piroe this week, with the summer transfer window closing in little over a week.

Football Insider’s report adds that Russell Martin’s Southampton ‘hope the lure of a double deal’ for Piroe and Wood will give them an edge over Leeds United as they seek a deal for Dutchman Piroe.

Who is this current Championship player?

Southampton leading?

Ryan Manning has already made the move to reunite with Martin this summer, following the full-back’s Swansea release, and it wouldn’t be surprising to see some more to do the same before September 1st.

Martin is a very ambitious and well-regarded coach. his style of play surely makes him an attractive manager to play under and a reunion for either, or both Wood and Piroe, could be a very desirable outcome for the players this summer.

But for Swansea, offloading both at the same time, and so close to the end of the summer transfer window, may not be so sensible.

Expect the Swans to want a hefty fee for the pair and expect Leeds to hold their own in the race for Piroe as well, with Daniel Farke’s side in need of some quality before the end of the summer transfer window.
