Released Derby County man considering contract offer from Barrow

Ex-Derby County defender James Chester is on trial with Barrow in League Two and is currently considering a contract offer from them, as per The Real EFL.

Chester, 34, made just seven senior appearances for Derby County last season. He played a further three games in the Premier League 2 for their U21 side but struggled for consistency and fitness.

He joined the Rams last summer and after one year in League One he finds himself as a free agent.

The former Manchester United youngster has plenty of experience. He has 296 Championship appearances to his name with four different teams.

Now, the former Wales international is edging closer to a move to the fourth tier. Chester is understood to be considering a contract offer from Barrow where he’s been on trial to build up fitness.

The 34-year-old has been struggling with injuries, but if kept fit he is a very strong signing for League Two level.

Chester has all the experience Pete Wild’s side could want and if they could pull this one off it would be a huge boost to their chances of success this season.

Barrow finished 13 points off the play-offs last season, but ended the campaign winless in five games. That could easily have been a lot closer but they’ve started strongly this season with the aim being to get into the top seven.

Chester would be a positive influence in the dressing room and his maturity could help get the squad over the line this season.

Wild would be able to use him in a number of ways. If Chester doesn’t start he could come on later in the game to see things out and help organise the defence whilst under pressure.

It’ll be interesting to see if Barrow tempt him into signing the contract and it would be a very positive sign if they do.
