Darren Moore issues update on key Sheffield Wednesday duo amid injury worries

Sheffield Wednesday boss Darren Moore is hoping for ‘good news’ on injuries to star men Josh Windass and George Byers.

Wednesday fell to their first defeat in the league since October, as the longest unbeaten league run in England’s top four division was ended last night by Barnsley. The Owls were beaten 4-2 in an exciting battle at Oakwell, with the promotion race in League One being blown wide open with Wednesday still having ten games left to play.

Two players who Moore was unable to call upon last night were Byers and Windass. Byers was substituted off in the first half of the 1-0 away win against Portsmouth a couple of weeks ago, whilst Windass was replaced against Bolton Wanderers the following game.

Speaking to Yorkshire Live, Moore revealed that he’s not yet sure about the pair’s condition and severity of their blows, but is hoping his squad can be up to full strength for the final run in of the campaign.

He said:

“Neither (Byers or Windass were close). I’m just waiting for some more information from the specialists, looking at their level of injuries and will be guided by them. Hopefully we’ll know more this week. We’ll wait and see.”

On waiting for Byers’ and Windass’ verdict, Moore continued:

“Hopefully we get some good news on those two.”

Injury concerns…

With both Byers’ and Windass’ sideline period unknown as of yet, Moore could be left with an anxious wait to find out whether either will be back to face Forest Green Rovers on Sunday, or at any point this season with just over a month of the campaign left, not leaving much breathing space for recovery time.

The Owls boss did receive a boost last night with Reece James returning to the bench after he picked up a knock against Bolton, but he was able to return in time to face Barnsley.

Wednesday were knocked off the top spot in the table following Plymouth Argyle’s 2-0 win away to Accrington Stanley last night, but with Wednesday boasting two games in hand over the Pilgrims, they’ll still be confident of winning the title.

The Owls travel to Forest Green on Sunday, with kick-off at 1pm.
