Sheffield United team news and predicted XI to face Sunderland: Midfielders sidelined for Heckingbottom

Sheffield United face Sunderland in the Championship tonight.

Sheffield United head into their midweek clash with Sunderland looking to bring an end to their poor form and settle the nerves heading into the final weeks of the season.

The Blades have now lost four of their last six Championship games and the gap to Middlesbrough is now back down to just three points. Paul Heckingbottom’s side still have a game in hand, so their fate is still very much in their own hands.

As for Sunderland, their recent slide has seen them drop to 12th and six points away from the play-offs. They did make a return to winning ways at the weekend though, picking up a narrow win over Norwich City.

As confirmed by The Star prior to the game, Heckingbottom will be without five players for the clash with the Black Cats.

Of those five, Rhys Norrington-Davies, Rhian Brewster and Enda Stevens are all long-term absentees. Blows to midfielders Ben Osborn and Andre Brooks are more recent though, so Heckingbottom will be down on a few of his options in the middle of the park.

There’s no new blows after the loss to Luton Town though, so it seems the boss will have a similar group to pick from tonight.

There is room for rotation if Heckingbottom feels the need to change it up after a poor run. However, alterations may still be minimal, though one of Manchester City loan duo Tommy Doyle and James McAtee will be hopeful of coming into the starting XI.

The tie kicks off at the Stadium of Light at 20:00 tonight.
