Opinion: Leyton Orient must go all-out to sign this Ipswich Town player permanently this summer

Leyton Orient recruited midfielder Idris El Mizouni on loan from Ipswich Town in the summer transfer window, and the Tunisian hasn’t looked back since.

Ipswich Town sanctioned the move for El Mizouni in a bid to give him more regular minutes away from Portman Road. The 22-year-old midfielder has long been viewed as one of the club’s more promising academy talents and with 26 first-team appearances to his name, he has been in and around the senior picture before.

However, that didn’t look likely to be the case for this season, hence his switch to Leyton Orient. Since then though, El Mizouni has been central to the O’s success and looking ahead to the 2023/24 campaign, the League Two title contenders have to do all they can to sign him permanently…

One to hold onto…

Of course, El Mizouni’s transfer fate will lean heavily on Kieran McKenna’s plans for his future. It remains to be seen if he wants to bring the Paris-born talent into his plans, but given the options at Portman Road, his time could be best served elsewhere.

The Tractor Boys have Sam Morsy, Dom Ball, Lee Evans, Pantuche Camara and Cameron Humphreys all as central midfield options. Massimo Luongo is also onboard but his deal is up at the end of the season, though given his recent form, it would be a real surprise if that wasn’t extended. So, with all those options, El Mizouni could struggle for action despite his strong season with Orient.

If that is to be the case, there’s no better place for him to start a new chapter than with Richie Wellens’ side. They’re 12 points clear of 4th place Northampton Town and eight ahead of 2nd place Carlisle United, so it would be a big surprise if they didn’t rise to League One as champions, let alone at all.

Who is this?

They’d be able to offer El Mizouni the third-tier football he has shown he deserves, while maintaining the services of someone who has been vital to their promotion push. As a 22-year-old with a high ceiling too, it could be worth the investment given the potential resale value if he was to draw interest in the future.

The move seems to work well for all, so Orient must do all they can to keep their midfield star. As said before, it will depend on Ipswich and McKenna’s plans for El Mizouni, but a move could be his best option, and if the door is open, Orient must swoop in.
