‘There’s no stopping them’ – Portsmouth v Sheffield Wednesday prediction: The72

Portsmouth host Sheffield Wednesday in League One this weekend.

Sheffield Wednesday travel to Hampshire to face a Portsmouth side who saw their five-game unbeaten streak snapped in midweek. Pompey were made to pay for a sloppy few minutes in their 3-1 defeat to Barnsley, but John Mousinho has insisted they will keep fighting for the play-offs.

His side sit in 10th as it stands, 10 points away from 6th placed Derby County.

As for Sheffield Wednesday, they’re in a commanding position in the race for the League One title.

The Owls remain level on points with 2nd placed Plymouth Argyle but their two games in hand combined with their imperious form means they’re strong favourites to go up as champions. Wednesday have now won four in a row in League One, defeating Peterborough United last weekend to stretch their unbeaten run to a record 21.

Here, a handful of our writers make their predictions for the game…

James Ray

“There won’t be many more tougher tests for Portsmouth this season. They boast a strong home record under Mousinho, recording five games without defeat. But, if anyone is going to snap that streak, it’s Sheffield Wednesday.

“The Owls are experiencing the best league run in their history and it will take some doing to stop them now. They can face adversity or tough opponents but they just seem to keep going, hence why they’re now at the summit of the table.

“I’ve been fairly impressed with Pompey in the early stages of Mousinho, but with Sheffield Wednesday in this form, there’s no stopping them. I’ll predict another win for the visitors.”

Score prediction: Portsmouth 1-2 Sheffield Wednesday

Who is this?

Luke Phelps

“Pompey look markedly better under Mousinho. But they can often crumble when playing the tougher teams in the league, as happened v Barnsley last time out.

“Sheffield Wednesday are hurtling towards the Championship and I really don’t think there’s a team capable of beating them in their current form.

“The Owls are commanding and consistent, and I think they’ll claim another win here, although it’ll have to be a hard-fought one.”

Score prediction: Portsmouth 0-1 Sheffield Wednesday
