Blackpool ace comments on contract fate with deal expiring this summer

Blackpool centre-back Jordan Thorniley has remained coy on his future at the club, insisting the relegation fight is his sole focus at the moment.

Blackpool man Thorniley is among the out-of-contract players at Bloomfield Road. He’s had some tough times since signing permanently in January 2020 but has been a regular this season, playing in 25 games across all competitions.

It has been a tough campaign for the Tangerines, and they find themselves right in the relegation fight heading into the final months of the season. Mick McCarthy’s side are six points away from safety, and despite his contract uncertainty, Thorniley’s main focus is the fight for survival.

Speaking with the Blackpool Gazette, Thorniley was quizzed on his contract situation but refused to be drawn on the matter, making his priorities clear. He said:

“I’m just focusing on the rest of the season.

“That’s my main aim: to keep this club up.”

Warrington-born Thorniley has now played for Blackpool 68 times having also spent a stint on loan with Oxford United last season.

Something for further down the line?

Blackpool’s sole focus right now has to be maintaining their Championship status. They’re in a tough spot at the moment and if they’re to pull this back and stay up, everyone needs to be fighting for the same cause.

Distractions like contract situations need to be cast aside for now. Understandably, the matter can play on the minds of some players given the uncertainty of free agency, but the survival fight has to take priority now.

That seems to be the mindset Thorniley is taking for the moment, but it will be interesting to see just how his situation pans out. He’s been a consistent performer this season and given his experience in the second and third-tier, he would be a good asset to hold onto beyond the end of the current campaign.
