Blackburn Rovers centre-back Hayden Carter has made it clear he’s keen to sign a new contract at Ewood Park, with his current deal up in 2024.
Blackburn Rovers academy product Carter has been knocking on the first-team door for some time now. His impressive spell with Burton Albion in 2021 saw many calling for him to be given a senior role, but he ended up heading to League One on loan again the following January, impressing again with Portsmouth.
For the 2022/23 campaign, Carter has been kept at Ewood Park as another option at the back, and in recent months, he’s finally been able to really nail down a place in the side.
The 23-year-old has played 24 times for Rovers across all competitions, forming a strong partnership with Dom Hyam.
Carter has drawn high praise regularly and now, he’s made it clear there’s no place he’d rather be. Speaking with Lancs Live, the Blackburn Rovers defender said he’s keen to extend his deal, with the contract currently expiring in 2024. He said:
“I just want to keep playing as I am and hopefully the contract comes. I have been here for nearly 10 years now.
“I would love to be offered a new contract and stay here for as long as possible. I will have to keep doing what I am doing and we’ll see what happens.”
The patient wait pays off…
At 23, Carter has had to bide his time and earn his place in the first-team at Blackburn Rovers. The key now is maintaining these levels in the long run and if he can, there’s no reason why Rovers shouldn’t look to secure his long-term future sooner rather than later.
Alongside Hyam, Jon Dahl Tomasson could have one of the league’s strongest centre-back partnerships on their day. Carter has plenty of time to keep developing too considering he’s still only got 31 Championship appearances to his name.
While Carter is still keen to stay and other clubs haven’t caught onto his talents yet, Blackburn should strike while the iron is hot and tie the defender down to a new contract.
