Sheffield Wednesday man ‘definitely ready’ after season of injury troubles, says Moore

Sheffield Wednesday manager Darren Moore has backed Lee Gregory to return to full fitness soon following injury problems.

Wednesday are top of the table and well on course for a return to the Championship after suffering relegation in 2021. The Owls are eight points clear of 3rd place Ipswich Town and have a game in hand to boast over the chasing back, which could only strengthen their position in the automatic spots if they win.

It’s been a great response this time round following play-off disappointment last season which saw Moore’s side finish 4th before losing in the semi-final to eventual play-off winners Sunderland. However, it hasn’t been a positive campaign so far for Gregory who was a key player last year and the club’s top scorer with 16 league goals. This time round, he’s been limited to just 14 starts due to injury and fitness concerns, scoring only five times in the league so far.

But Moore is now hopeful that the 34-year-old is over his recent troubles and can kick on for the remainder of the season.

Moore told Yorkshire Live:

“Greggers is in a position now where we feel he can start games. If I see fit for him to start next week at Portsmouth then I will do. But he’s definitely ready and with the games coming up, midweek games etc, he’ll definitely start games.”

Welcome return

Gregory’s frustrating campaign now hopefully looks to be turning a corner with his return set to bolster Wednesday’s front line in the busy run in until the end of the season.

In Gregory’s absence, Josh Windass and Michael Smith have taken up the goal scoring burden, netting 14 and 13 times respectively, but despite his depleted minutes the Sheffield-born striker’s tally of five this season still ranks joint fourth at the club.

Since returning against MK Dons with a goal in the 5-2 demolition in February, Gregory was a late substitute in the Owls’ two previous games, and given the form of Windass and Smith he may have to bide his time longer before receiving serious minutes again.

Sheffield Wednesday next travel to Portsmouth on Saturday, with kick-off at 3pm.
