Opinion: Blackburn Rovers must prioritise summer swoop for 25-year-old after January embarrassment

Blackburn Rovers have had some real hits and misses in the transfer window over years gone by, and this summer will prove to be an important period for the club.

Blackburn Rovers’ January transfer window, to be frank, was pretty embarrassing. They failed to bring in a striker again despite numerous links and deals for Lewis O’Brien and Ethan Brierley were left too late, with neither beating the deadline in poor circumstances.

The sole addition for Rovers in January was Sorba Thomas, and thankfully, he has not failed to impress. The Welshman has been a huge hit on the right-hand side for Jon Dahl Tomasson’s side, quickly becoming a popular figure as Blackburn have tightened their grip on a play-off spot.

After such a poor January, Rovers must pounce quickly in January, and Thomas has to be at the top of their shopping list.

Start as you mean to go on…

Regardless of whether they’re in the Championship or the Premier League, Blackburn Rovers will need a busy summer window. They simply can’t afford to leave business as late again, so starting as they mean to go on by striking an early deal for Thomas could be perfect.

Of course, it remains to be seen what parent club Huddersfield Town have in mind. Given the threat of relegation they are under though, they could be a good feeding ground for clubs like Blackburn Rovers to swoop in for top players like Thomas.

What shirt number did Adam Armstrong wear for Blackburn Rovers?

The former non-league star fits Tomasson’s system brilliantly and is a proven performer at Championship level. The threat he provides on the right ranks him as one of the division’s best creators on his day, having provided 22 assists in 83 games back at Huddersfield.

Thomas can have a vital role to play moving forward under Tomasson and to truly expel the demons of January, Blackburn could do with an early statement signing. Thomas could be just that, and his permanent acquisition should be considered as a matter of priority.
