‘Really hurt us’ – Kompany makes revelation over Burnley’s summer swoop for 23-year-old

Burnley boss Vincent Kompany has revealed Vitinho’s performances against Anderlecht were a big reason behind his decision to bring him to Turf Moor last summer.

Burnley recruited versatile Brazilian wideman Vitinho last summer as part of the huge squad overhaul at Turf Moor.

Operating on the wing or as a full-back, the 23-year-old has made a good impression in his debut campaign in the Championship. He’s chipped in with three goals and three assists in 32 games across all competitions, proving a nuisance in attack and a reliable figure in defence.

His minutes have been slightly more limited in recent months after Connor Roberts’ return to the starting XI while the Brazilian was sidelined for around a month across December and January.

Now though, he’s drawn high praise from Kompany, who has also revealed to Lancs Live that Vitinho’s tricky displays against former club Anderlecht were a big factor in pursuing a deal last summer. He said:

“I think the recruitment process we do is quite extensive so it’s not just like pulling a name out of a hat and then trying to sign him. There are lots of hurdles to pass but then there was one thing that did remain was that every single time we played against him in Belgium, he was that kid that come off the bench and really hurt us.

“He really hurt my team, but his ability is to play left, right, inside, outside, but I would say the same for Connor [Roberts], I would say the same for [Ian] Maatsen.”

A thorn in Kompany’s side…

After proving to be a nuisance for Kompany’s Anderlecht side back in Belgium, Vitinho is now a key part of the former Manchester City defender’s plans for Burnley.

He’s settled well on these shores and even though his starts have been more limited in recent weeks, the Belo Horizonte native still has a valuable role to play. Vitinho has been a handful off the bench when coming on as a winger or full-back and it will be hoped that, as a young player, he can only develop further over time.

Vitinho is on a long-term deal with the Lancashire outfit and he will be keen to become a nailed on starter again in good time, although Connor Roberts is strong competition for a starting spot at right-back.
