Birmingham City man ‘out for two or three weeks’, says Eustace

Birmingham City drew 1-1 away at Wigan Athletic on Saturday.

Birmingham City halted a run of a four-straight defeats in the Championship after drawing v strugglers Wigan Athletic on Saturday. John Eustace’s side took the lead after just four minutes through Juninho Bacuna but saw Wigan get back on level term through Ashley Fletcher in the second half.

Scott Hogan missed from the penalty spot for Birmingham City and the game ended in a 1-1 draw, with Blues remaining seven points from the drop. But Eustace has been dealt a fresh injury blow with midfielder Gary Gardner having missed the Wigan game altogether.

Eustace said of the 30-year-old after the game:

“Unfortunately, Gaz has strained his groin. He’s going to be out for two or three weeks.”

Gardner has featured just eight times in the Championship this season, with injury having plagued his campaign so far. And injuries have largely plagued Birmingham City’s season altogether, with Gardner joining the likes of Troy Deeney and Dion Sanderson on the sidelines, among others.

Tough times…

Birmingham City have really struggled in the past few months. They’re definitely in a relegation battle but they still have a decent gap between themselves and the bottom three, and they have some winnable games coming up on their agenda.

They host Rotherham United next time out and they face QPR before the international break too. Eustace will be praying that his side can pick up points in the winnable games and build on their seven-point gap to safety, but the growing amount of injuries in the Blues camp certainly isn’t helping their cause.

Birmingham City v Rotherham United takes place on Saturday.
