Blackburn Rovers beat Leicester City 2-1 in the FA Cup fifth round last night.
Goals from Tyrhys Dolan and Sammie Szmodics sealed the win for Rovers. Jon Dahl Tomasson’s side are now in the quarter-final draw for the first time in seven years, capping what’s been a hugely impressive season so far for the Lancashire club.
Blackburn Rovers are six-time winners of the competition with their last FA Cup win coming way back in 1928, and their last FA Cup final appearance dating back to 1960.
Joining Blackburn in the quarter-finals draw are the likes of Brighton, Fulham, and Manchester City who all won last night. Tonight, Southampton host Grimsby Town whilst Burnley play Fleetwood Town, Manchester United play West Ham, and Sheffield United play Tottenham Hotspur.
The FA Cup prize fund was increased for this season. According to the FA website, the winners of the competition receive £2million and the runners-up get £1million. And after last night’s win over Leicester City in what was the fifth round of the competition, Blackburn Rovers are set to receive £225,000.
And should Blackburn Rovers progress through the quarter-finals they’ll receive £450,000, and then if they progress through the semi-finals they’ll get £1million – if they lose in the semi-finals they’ll get £500,000.
So there’s a lot to play for. Blackburn Rovers endured a slow January transfer window which perhaps highlighted a lack of finances at the club, so Tomasson and the Blackburn officials will welcome an extended cup run, as well as the Rovers supporters who were treated to a memorable night at the King Power Stadium last night.
Up next for Rovers is a lunchtime clash v Sheffield United on Saturday.
