‘Lacking for a while now’ – Tottenham Hotspur v Portsmouth prediction: The72

Portsmouth travel to Tottenham Hotspur in the FA Cup this weekend.

Portsmouth are in disrepair after a New Year’s Day defeat v Charlton Athletic which saw the end of the Cowley brothers’ time at Fratton Park, following a run of one win in 13 league games.

Pompey sit nine points away from the play-offs and will hope that a new manager could reignite their promotion hopes.

Their opponents head into this match in poor form too, and they’ll surely look at this favourable FA Cup tie as a chance to regain their momentum.

Spurs have failed to overcome any of Aston Villa, Brentford, Nottingham Forest, and Liverpool in their last five outings and are losing ground in the race for a Champions League place.

Ahead of the clash, a handful of The72’s writers have provided their predictions for the match…

Cameron Smart

“Both teams look out of sorts and I’m struggling to see it being the most entertaining game. Spurs are likely to rotate but should still be able to get through this one with the amount of quality they boast.

“Pompey’s league form is cause for concern but they should be up for this considering the occasion and they could make things difficult for an uninspiring Tottenham side. However, I fully expect the hosts to come up with the goods and progress to the next round with relative ease.”

Score prediction: Tottenham Hotspur 3-0 Portsmouth

In what season did David Wagner guide Huddersfield Town to promotion from the Championship?

Luke Phelps

Portsmouth have been lacking for a while now and a trip to Spurs, whilst exciting for a lot of the players, will be a very difficult one.

“I don’t think Spurs will have it all their own way because I’m expecting Conte to field a weakened side, probably with a lot of younger players, and so it will certainly be a challenge for those youngsters to overcome this League One Portsmouth side.

“Still, I’m sure there’ll be some first-team regulars in the Tottenham XI and for that reason, I’m going to say home win.”

Score prediction: Tottenham Hotspur 2-1 Portsmouth
