4 players Charlton Athletic should sell or loan out in January – do you agree?

Charlton Athletic are currently going through a rough patch after a promising start to the season, having failed to win any of their last five matches.

The Addicks currently sit 14th in League One but are hopeful of moving up towards the play-off places as the season progresses. Ben Garner took charge over the summer and is slowly building up a squad that can compete in the division.

The team has shown glimpses of what a good side they can be but finding consistency has so far proved difficult. January could be a good time for Garner to reassess his squad and maybe move on some players that don’t feature in his plans or who need to gain some experience elsewhere.

Here we look at four players Charlton Athletic should sell or loan out in January…

Jake Forster-Caskey – sell

Forster-Caskey has been a good servant to the club since his arrival in 2017 but his days at The Valley appeared to be numbered.

The midfielder hasn’t played much football in recent years after a cruciate ligament injury ruled him out of the majority of the last campaign. Garner must feel Forster-Caskey’s best days are behind him, only selecting once as an unused substitute in league competition so far.

Forster-Caskey was free to talk to clubs in the summer but an eventual move elsewhere failed to materialise. This is likely to again be explored in January but a step down to League Two is the most probable outcome for the former Brighton man.

Craig MacGillivray – sell

Goalkeeper MacGillivray has fallen out of favour under Garner having occupied the number one slot for the whole of the last campaign.

The Scottish-born stopper has lost his place to summer signing Jojo Wollacott and even sat on the bench for both of the EFL Cup games so far.

There could still be a chance for the former Portsmouth man to reclaim his place with Wollacott called up on international duty. However, MacGillivray came close to leaving for Dundee United in the summer and you would expect talks of a move away to begin again in January.

Diallang Jaiyesimi – loan

Jaiyesimi has been a regular for the club over the last few seasons but has found game time under Garner hard to come by. The right winger has started just one league game so far, making the odd cameo from the bench.

The former Swindon Town man scored the winner in an EFL match against Walsall but this wasn’t enough to force his way back into the side, Jesurun Rak-Sakyi and Charlie Kirk currently appear ahead of him for the wide position.

He was wanted on loan in last month’s transfer window but didn’t secure a move.

Charlie Adam announced his retirement yesterday. Who did Blackpool sign him from in 2009?

Lucas Ness – loan

Defender Ness has great potential and could already be knocking on the door of first-team football with some impressive displays in the cup.

Ness came through the youth ranks at non-league Metropolitan Police and has already had a number of Championship clubs looking at him.

The 20-year-old spent six months out on loan at Hampton and Richmond last season and this clearly benefited him, maybe a spell at a club in League One or Two would help his development further.
