Presenting the inside scoop on the latest Football League news

‘At the moment’ – Southampton’s stance on Watford and Middlesbrough target Adam Armstrong revealed

TalkSPORT reporter Alex Crook claims that Southampton will only look to move on Adam Armstrong if they can bring in another striker this summer.

Armstrong, 25, joined Southampton from Blackburn Rovers last summer for a reported £15million.

But the striker would endure a tough first season in the top flight, netting just twice in his 25 Premier League appearances.

It’s recently been reported by The Sun that Middlesbrough and Watford are keen on taking Armstrong in on loan this summer.

But speaking to GiveMeSport, Crook had this to say:

“Adam Armstrong, I’ve been told, would only be allowed to go if they get another striker in.

“At the moment, there’s no real interest in moving him on.”

Armstrong was a prolific name at Championship level for Blackburn. In the 2020/21 season he scored an impressive 28 goals in 40 league appearances for Rovers, scoring 16 in the season before.

But his step up to the Premier League may have come a bit too early. He undoubtedly struggled last time round and looks as though he could maybe benefit from a season on loan in the Championship.

Waiting game…

For either Watford or Middlesbrough, bringing in Armstrong on loan this summer would be a really impressive capture.

But given Crooks quotes, it seems like it might be a waiting game for both clubs.

Southampton don’t look to be in a rush to send Armstrong out on loan this summer. They could yet bring in a striker but that might not happen until later on in the transfer window.

Neither Watford or Middlesbrough should count on Armstrong becoming available later on in the window and so both clubs should go about their transfer business as usual.

Both clubs will surely be battling for the top-six next season, with both looking to bring in some more fresh faces this month.
