Watford mainstay set to complete seven-figure exit

Watford midfielder Moussa Sissoko is set to join French side Nantes in a €2m deal, a report from Ouest France has stated.

Watford‘s relegation to the Championship will bring about some departures at Ewood Park.

Key players such as Ismaila Sarr and Emmanuel Dennis have both been linked with immediate returns to the Premier League. Now, reports in France have said another starting XI mainstay set to head for the exit door is midfielder Sissoko.

Ouest France state that the experienced midfielder is set to return to his native with Ligue 1 outfit Nantes.

A deal of €2m has been agreed between the relevant parties and Sissoko is poised to sign a two-year contract with the club ahead of the new season. However, interestingly, The Athletic’s Adam Leventhal states there will be a buy-back option for the Hornets if they win promotion back to the Premier League.

It comes after Sissoko played in all but two Premier League games last season, missing out on the first two games of the campaign before playing the next 36 in a row after his move to Watford.

He also assumed the captaincy shortly after his arrival, chipping in with two goals and one assist in the process.

An eyebrow-raising deal…

Seeing Sissoko return to his home country at this stage in his career following a relegation wouldn’t have surprised many.

However, the inclusion of a buy-back clause does catch the eye. Sissoko has a wealth of Premier League experience under his belt and looked a standout player at Vicarage Road before tailing off towards the end of the campaign – as many did, in fairness.

Nantes will be hoping to tie up the deal for the former Spurs and Newcastle United man, with a fee reportedly agreed.
