Latest Sunderland news: Black Cats linked with Southampton man, PL defender eyed + more

Sunderland look to have a few new signings in their sights ahead of their return to Championship football.

Alex Neil’s Sunderland side earned promotion via the League One play-offs last season. But the club are yet to make any marquee signings so far this summer.

But one player who could become a marquee signing for the Black Cats this summer though is Jack Rudoni.

Reports this month have revealed that Sunderland have had had a seven-figure bid for the AFC Wimbledon midfielder rejected, with reports yesterday revealing that Sunderland and Huddersfield Town have both had fresh bids for Rudoni rejected.

Elsewhere, Sunderland are said to be keen on Southampton’s Will Smallbone.

Reports have linked the Black Cats, Burnley and Millwall with the 22-year-old who could be sent out on loan this summer.

And another player being linked with a move to the Stadium of Light is 19-year-old Jack MacIver, who’s said to be on trial with Sunderland after his recent trial period with Sheffield Wednesday (Football Scotland’s live transfer blog, 27.06.22).

The last player to be linked with a move to Sunderland recently is Everton’s Jarrad Branthwaite, with a report from Daily Mail’s print edition (25.06.22) revealing that the Black Cats are one of a handful of Championship sides keen on signing the young defender on loan this summer.

Finally, a recent report from Daily Record revealed that Scottish giants Rangers still hold an interest in Sunderland striker Ross Stewart, with the Black Cats still working on a new deal for their star striker.

Sunderland have a decent squad as it stands but Neil will know he needs more to be able to compete in the Championship next season.

There is still enough time for Sunderland to do some decent business in the transfer window this summer though.
