Key Sunderland man set to sign new deal as overseas interest is confirmed

Bailey Wright is set to sign a new deal with Sunderland, reports The Northern Echo.

Wright, 29, sees his Sunderland contract expire this week.

The Australian international has just concluded his second full season with the Black Cats, featuring 40 times in league fixtures last season as he helped Sunderland on their way to promotion.

Scott Wilson of The Northern Echo says that Wright was offered a new deal following the club’s play-off final victory over Wycombe Wanderers at the beginning of the summer, and that he had interest from ‘at least’ two clubs in Australia.

But now, ahead of his nation’s trip to the Qatar World Cup later this year, Wright is set to sign a new deal with Sunderland.

Wright became something of a fan favourite last season for his commanding performances in the heart of defence. He’s a player with bags of quality and Championship experience too, so he’ll be a crucial player for Alex Neil going into next season.

A testing season…

The 2022/23 season will see Championship fixtures halted for a month for the Qatar World Cup. For a lot of teams in the second tier, they’ll see players jet off to Qatar and perhaps come back in need of a rest, but Wright is Sunderland’s only player heading to the World Cup as it stands.

For Neil then, the World Cup could give him and his players a much-needed rest midway through the season, and with only Wright heading for the World Cup it could see the Black Cats gain an upper-hand (in terms of player fitness) at a crucial point in the season.

What the expectations for Sunderland are next season remain to be seen. But fans will be expecting, or at least hopeful of a fairly comfortable finish in the second tier.
