Presenting the inside scoop on the latest Football League news

Burnley, Millwall and Sunderland all keen on PL midfielder who could be available for loan this summer, report claims

Burnley, Millwall and Sunderland are all battling to sign Southampton’s Will Smallbone on loan, reports claim.

Smallbone, 22, is a product of the Southampton youth academy.

He made his Premier League debut for the Saints during the 2019/20 campaign where he racked up nine Premier League appearances, grabbing two assists in the process.

But the Irishman couldn’t capitalise on his early hype having then featured just three times in the 2020/21 campaign and four times in the previous one.

Now though, reports claim that Southampton could send Smallbone out on loan and that Burnley, Millwall and Sunderland are among the teams interested in the midfielder.

Burnley and Millwall have enjoyed strong starts to this summer transfer window so far. Both clubs look set to bring in more players too, and really have a go at finishing inside the top-six next season.

Sunderland meanwhile have had a subdued start to the summer transfer window ahead of their return to the Championship, but Alex Neil’s side look to have a few irons in the fire.

What next for Smallbone?

The midfielder is a promising one. He has great technical ability and looks to be held in high regards by his club, so they’ll do their due diligence before sending him out on loan.

Next season, expect Burnley and Millwall to be in the top half of the Championship table at least, and Sunderland to be in or around the mid-table pack.

The Saints might prefer for Smallbone to go to a team like Burnley who could yet be battling for automatic promotion, but it remains to be seen.

He’s certainly a decent young player though and for any of Burnley, Millwall and Sunderland, he’d be a decent loan capture for the 2022/23 campaign.
