‘We’ll have a discussion’ – League One boss quizzed on possibility of signing released Sunderland man

Released Sunderland striker Will Grigg has been spotted with the MK Dons squad at their pre-season training camp in Ireland.

Grigg, 30, was released by Sunderland the end of last season following a tough spell on Wearside.

The Northern Irishman managed just five goals in two-and-a-half years at the club having signed from Wigan Athletic midway through the 2018/19 campaign for a reported £4million fee.

Grigg spent time on loan with MK Dons during the 2020/21 campaign where he netted eight goals in 20 League One outings, then spending time on loan with Rotherham United last season but managing just two goals in 19 league appearances.

Now a free agent, MK Citizen has revealed that Grigg has been seen training with MK Dons in their pre-season training camp in Ireland.

And Dons boss Liam Manning was quizzed on the possibility of signing Grigg, telling MK Citizen:

“We’ll have a discussion about it – his priority is to get up to full fitness again having missed the back-end of last season But he’s looked really sharp. It’s a discussion we will have at the back end of this week or the start of next week. It’s not one I’ll say definitely no to, but not one I’ll say yes to either. I’ll sit on the fence!”

A sign of the times…

To think that Sunderland paid £4million for Grigg, little over three years ago, is strange. The club has a completely new outlook now and the release of Grigg following his big-money move shows that the club has moved on, and that Grigg has too.

He showed with MK Dons during the 2020/21 campaign that he can still score goals at League One level and although he struggled with Rotherham last season, he’s still only 30, and he could still have some prolific years ahead of him.

Sunderland have a busy summer ahead of them as they gear up for their return to the Championship, but don’t expect them to spend £4million on any potential new signings.
