Update emerges on Portsmouth striker’s immediate future as loan interest grows

Portsmouth striker Dan Gifford is drawing loan interest from National League clubs but he won’t be heading out just yet as Pompey’s striker search drags on, The News has said.

Portsmouth currently have no first-team strikers on the books, despite the club’s efforts to bolster their attacking ranks before embarking on pre-season.

Loan men George Hirst and Tyler Walker have returned to their parent clubs, meaning youngster Dan Gifford is the only natural striker on the books at Fratton Park. He has gained first-team experience out on loan and thoroughly impressed on loan with Bognor Regis Town, but the 18-year-old is yet to make his Pompey bow.

Now, The News has issued an update on Gifford’s immediate future.

It is claimed that there is National League loan interest in the Pompey starlet. However, for now, he will be remaining with Danny Cowley’s first-team given their lack of options up top. Gifford will be heading to Spain for Portsmouth’s pre-season training camp.

A pre-season chance…

At 18, another loan move away from Fratton Park may be best for Gifford, especially if Portsmouth are able to recruit a few more options at striker ahead of the new season.

Getting regular game time at any level will be important, be it in the youth academy or out on loan in non-league football.

That being said, he has already proven himself in the youth academy and after a strong spell with Bognor Regis Town, a step up to a National League club could be the next step for the talented forward.

Until then though, Gifford will be keen to make the most of his chance to impress in pre-season as he gears up for the 2022/23 season.
