Sunderland taking a look at 19-year-old who was on trial with Sheffield Wednesday last month

Sunderland are set to take a look at Scottish youngster Jack MacIver, as per Football Scotland’s live transfer blog (27.06.22, 3:39pm).

MacIver, 19, is available on a free transfer after leaving Aberdeen.

The attacking midfielder failed to make his league debut for Aberdeen but made a handful of appearances in cup competitions, and played regularly for the club’s youth teams.

And he did enough to impress Sheffield Wednesday who brought him in on trial earlier in the year.

The Owls were seemingly taking a long look at MacIver, who was first reported to be on trial with the Owls back in March.

Darren Moore’s side however decided against the signing at the end of last month, at which point it was also claimed that MacIver would then head to an unnamed Championship club on trial.

And now, it’s been revealed that MacIver is training with Sunderland ahead of the 2022/23 campaign, in a bid to earn a deal with the Black Cats ahead of their return to the Championship.

A new Sunderland…

Sunderland, under the ownership of Kyril Louis-Dreyfus, have a distinct and newfound philosophy which centres around bringing in younger players and developing them for their own first-team.

Names like Dennis Cirkin joined last summer and prevailed, with other names like Trai Hume and Jay Matete joining midway through last season.

MacIver could be the next youngster to sign onto the books at Sunderland. But fans want to see some players with Championship experience arrive this summer.

There’s still plenty of time for Alex Neil to make some promising signings before the start of the new signing. Time though is quickly running out.
