Sheffield Wednesday could bank welcome financial boost amid former star’s Nottingham Forest, Watford links

Sheffield Wednesday could receive a welcome windfall if Reading striker Lucas Joao makes a move this summer after including a 20% sell-on clause in their 2019 deal with the Royals.

Sheffield Wednesday sold Angolan forward Joao to Reading three years ago now.

The move came after managed 29 goals and 13 assists in 127 games for the Owls and he has since become a big hit with the Royals. 89 games have yielded 38 goals and 14 assists and while a hip injury hindered his game time last season, he still managed 10 goals in 24 league outings.

His form has drawn interest from elsewhere, with Nottingham Forest, Watford and Besiktas all said to be keen this summer.

Now, amid claims of Besiktas’ bid, The Star has detailed cash windfall Sheffield Wednesday would receive from a deal.

It is reported that the Owls negotiated a 20% sell-on clause for Joao. That could land them as much as £600,000 if the claims of a £3m bid from the Turkish giants materialise into a summer transfer for the Reading star.

Room to reinvest

Obviously, plenty of time remains in the window and it seems there’s nothing decided on what Joao’s immediate future holds at this stage.

However, a cash windfall would certainly come as a big boost for Sheffield Wednesday.

Darren Moore is determined to make changes to the Sheffield Wednesday squad this summer. Michael Smith, Michael Ihiekwe, Will Vaulks, Ben Heneghan, David Stockdale and youngster Bobby Dunn have already made their way to Hillsborough in an eye-catching window to date.

An influx of cash from a Joao deal would give Wednesday the chance to either reinvest it into the playing squad or other areas of the club, so they will be eagerly awaiting updates on the situation as the summer progresses
