Portsmouth’s stance on rumoured interest in Barnsley man emerges

Portsmouth are in need of a new striker before the new season begins.

As it stands, 18-year-old Dan Gifford is the only natural striker on the books at Fratton Park after loan players George Hirst and Tyler Walker returned to Leicester City and Coventry City respectively.

A host of strikers have been linked with Pompey though, one being Barnsley’s Adeboyejo.

However, The News has now reported that it is their understanding that the Tykes forward is not a player on Danny Cowley’s radar.

The Portsmouth boss is looking at other options and despite the importance of adding a new striker sooner rather than later, Adeboyejo is not among those being considered ahead of the 2022/23 campaign.

Given Portsmouth’s need to add some goals, it would have been a surprise to see them move for Adeboyejo.

The 24-year-old is a hard-working forward and he can prove to be a nuisance off the bench, but his senior career is yet to take off. In 97 Barnsley appearances, the forward has scored only nine goals and spells with Bristol Rovers (loan), Cambridge United (loan) and Leyton Orient failed to inspire too.

He will be hoping he can kick on next season, but it remains to be seen where he is playing after being offered a new contract.

Portsmouth will be hoping their striker search can start to bear fruit sooner rather than later. A goalscorer is needed with the earlier mentioned Gifford the only natural centre-forward on the books as it stands.
