Latest Millwall news: Lions closing in on Championship duo, youngsters attracting transfer interest + more

Millwall’s summer transfer plans got underway with the signing of Zian Flemming last weekend.

The youngster arrives from Fortuna Sittard for a club record fee and it’s given Millwall fans optimism ahead of the new season, with the Lions looking set to sign a few more players in the coming weeks.

And two names who are said to be close to joining are George Honeyman and Benik Afobe.

Honeyman was reported earlier this week to be on the brink of signing for the Lions, with a medical said to have taken place earlier in the week.

And Afobe is also set to return to The Den after his impressive spell on loan with Millwall last season.

The striker was being linked with a move to Club Brugge but now London News Online says that Afobe and Millwall have agreed terms, with a medical said to have taken place yesterday.

And manager Gary Rowett says that ‘one or two’ more signings are close to completion – likely Honeyman and Afobe – and that a couple more may follow in the coming weeks.

He told London News Online earlier this week:

“We’re very close to bringing one or two more in….and a couple won’t be far behind that as well.”

Lastly, Rowett has also revealed that Millwall youngsters Isaac Olaofe and Alex Mitchell both have suitors ahead of this summer, but that both will have a chance to impress in pre-season, saying:

“We’ve had a lot of loan interest in the likes of Isaac and Alex Mitchell. The plan is, as we spoke about previously, give them the best possible chance pre-season to stake their claim in the squad this year and then we’ll make a decision, maybe a few weeks into pre-season, as to where we think they are.”

There’s some exciting weeks ahead for Millwall. Despite seeing Jed Wallace secure his move to West Brom, there’s some exciting signings on the horizon and fans should be quietly optimistic of another top-six push next time round.

But the Championship roster is looking as competitive as ever, and so Millwall and Rowett must have patience in their pursuit of Premier League football.
