Journalist comments on emerging Barnsley transfer links to Portuguese full-back

Barnsley were relegated after a particularly difficult Championship campaign last season.

They face a summer of restructuring in order to get themselves ready for League One football.

One rumour doing the rounds, according to the Daily Mail, links the Tykes to Portuguese defender Kiki Afonso.

Since this interest was broken earlier today, it has become a topic of conversation for Barnsley fans.

It is also something that respected local journalist Doug O’Kane has commented on with the following tweet:

Kiki Afonso – a return to English football?

Portuguese left-back Afonso has spent pretty much all his professional career with sides in his homeland.

He’s featured for 11 sides across all levels in Portugal. The only time he’s been away from his homeland was a four-month stay with Dagenham and Redbridge between September 2013 and January 2014.

The former Portugal Under-20 international is currently on the books at top-tier side Vizela. He made 25 appearances for them last season, providing three assists.

Now the Mail’s Simon Jones writes that Barnsley “have outlined” Afonso “as a target” for the coming season.

Jones adds that new Barnsley boss Michael Duff “has earmarked Afonso for his defence.”

Barnsley, as O’Kane indicates, need bodies in defence and especially at left-back.

O’Kane does say that he is ‘aware’ of rumours linking Afonso to the South Yorkshire club but cannot verify the likelihood this will come off.

However, should there be anything substantial in these reports then Barnsley would be foolish not to pursue a signing.

Afonso has 121 games in Portugal’s Liga Sabseg – the second tier of football. These run alongside 32 appearances in the top tier of Portuguese football

It is the level of experience that would easily translate across to League One level.
